What is an ice dam, and why do they form here?
An ice dam forms when heat escaping through your roof melts the underside of the snowpack. The meltwater runs down to the cold eaves and refreezes into a ridge of ice. As the ridge grows, water pools behind it and backs up under the shingles, leaking into walls, insulation, and ceilings.
